Why should we drink ionized alkaline water?

Life-giving qualities of water

Water is the source of life. At birth, our bodies contain more than 90% of water. Our cells actually bathe in water, otherwise known as interstitial fluid – their natural reservoir of nutrients and oxygen, as well as a medium for removal of metabolic waste. However, the amount of water tends to dwindle with the passage of time. For instance, the average adult body already contains 60-70% of water, and in the eight decade of life – even less.

Responding to shrinking water resources, our bodies tend to „dry out“. This process is accompanied by weakening functional capacities and gradual physical deterioration, known as ageing, as a result. Declining metabolism, poor circulation, inadequate nutrient supply… these are just a few negative outcomes resulting from an insufficient intake of water.

So, the general recommendation is to drink as much fresh water as you can, without waiting for signs of thirst to appear.  In fact, the moment you feel thirst, the organism already wants half a litre of water. The daily norm for an adult person is about 2 – 2.5 litres. However, the quality and characteristics of water are at the core of its beneficial effect.

The source of powerful antioxidants

Alkaline water is distinguished by a negative oxidation-reduction potential (ORP=-100…-200mV), indicating powerful antioxidant properties. This means that it has plenty of free electrons to give away to free radicals.

Oxidation-reduction reactions or exchange of electrons between atoms or groups of atoms are the basis of all natural chemical processes. Atoms lacking electrons try to steal them from other atoms. These are called free radicals – unstable molecules with an unpaired electron. They form as a result of oxidation reactions in the human body (oxidation is the gain of oxygen). Free radicals have high positive oxidation potential. Seeking out electrons, they continuously attack healthy cells, thus disturbing their normal activity and even destroying cellular structure. This process may trigger uncontrollable chemical reactions, leading to a number of pathological conditions in the human body.

On the other hand, there are atoms, called antioxidants, which have a surplus of electrons ready to donate. By giving them away to free radicals, antioxidants promote the formation of stable oxygen molecules and thus protect the organism against oxidative stress. Antioxidants are characterised by a negative oxidation-reduction potentialNegative value means that oxygen, present in hydroxyl ion, has an extra electron. The more negative ORP value, the higher anti-oxidative effect.

Alkaline water has a negative ORP potential due to negative hydroxyl ions prevalent in its composition. With an intake of alkalised water, the organism receives an extra supply of electrons able to reduce the hazardous potential of free radicals and thus increase the amount of oxygen in the blood. As a result, the nutrient absorption is improved, the immune system is strengthened and healthy cells are protected. Highly saturated with oxygen, internal environment of the body acquires anti-carcinogenic characteristics.

Restoration of pH balance

A multitude of studies show that acidification of the body is at the bottom of all disease. Accordingly, an acid–alkaline balance is the prerequisite of good health. As a matter of fact, the maintenance of vital functions of the body depends on adequate blood alkalinity level within a narrow range of 7.35 and 7.45 pH. Only high alkaline blood is able to supply the organism with nutrients and eliminate metabolic waste that our cells produce.

In modern conditions, however, this is quite a challenge. Inappropriate diet, stress, negative emotions promote the formation of acidic waste. This may not be a problem at a very young age. However, with the lapse of time the ability of the body to eliminate waste declines and the latter starts to accumulate. The body’s inner environment is gradually acidified and the increasing prevalence of positive hydrogen ions shows up. As a result, the blood alkalinity level drops and the risk of related diseases grows.

Chemistry teaches us that acid is best neutralised by alkali, yet the organism doesn‘t produce alkaline substances. They have to be received from outer sources – food and beverages. Unfortunately, modern nutrition habits and food quality do not secure a proper supply of alkaline elements.

Alkaline water, as the very name indicates, contains only negative hydrogen ions and alkaline metal ions (calcium, magnesium, sodium and potassium). Note that ionised substances are best absorbed by the body. That‘s why the alkalising effect of these easily absorbable alkaline metal ions is very high indeed. With a daily intake of alkaline water, the body receives an alkaline ion „cocktail”, prerequisite to maintaining a healthy inner environment of the body. As a result, the acidification of the body goes down and the immunity to diseases goes up.

Hydration down to the cellular level

Water molecules come in clusters rather than stay single. However, tap water molecules form twice as big clusters (10-13 molecules) as those of ionised water (5-6 molecules).

Due to smaller molecular formations, ionised water immediately passes through cell membranes and integrates into metabolism. The body doesn‘t have to waste its energy anymore to decompose the complex molecular structure. Ionised alkaline water penetrates tissues easier than regular one, providing abundant hydration to the cells and eliminating toxins accumulated in the intestine, down to its deepest recesses. Alkalised water neutralises and liquefies acidic waste accumulated in the body, which is then easily eliminated through kidneys.
