SPORTS AND HYDRATION: THE BENEFITS OF ALKALINE WATER
Anyone engaging in sports, whether professionally or recreationally, needs to receive an adequate amount of water. Sufficient hydration is one of the major factors that stand behind good results and a sense of well-being. During an intense workout the body loses a lot of fluids and mineral salts, and these reserves need to be restored. Studies show that losing a mere 2% of bodily fluids results in a deterioration of athletic performance. Given the efficiency of hydration, both quantity and quality, and even the structure of water are important. This is where ionised alkaline water comes into the picture.
During the ionisation process, water molecules undergo a chemical restructuring known as micro-clustering. Molecular cluster size is reduced, which allows the body to absorb fluids, along with their mineral content, more rapidly. In fact, the absorption rate of ionised water is up to 6 times higher than that of regular tap water. This peculiarity makes it an excellent source of hydration for physically active people.
With every single muscle contraction, our body produces metabolic acids, lactic and pyruvic in particular. These acids are at the root of the burning sensation and muscle tension felt after an intense workout, when cellular levels of oxygen drop. Unpleasant sensations restrict one’s ability to exercise and can even disrupt physical activity altogether until recovery takes place. Efficient hydration is essential in this case. The greater the supply of water in the muscle tissues, the easier it is for them to remove acids.
However, our muscles may not be content with simple hydration and require an infusion of alkaline substances to neutralise acidic residue, as alkalis are known to destroy acids. High alkaline water will replenish the blood with alkaline substances and deliver them to the muscles. Getting rid of acidic residue will ease the pain of contractions, reduce muscle fatigue and shorten recovery time. It will also reduce the likelihood of lactic acid formation in the muscle tissues, as the pH level of ionised alkaline water is higher than that of tap water.
Professional athletes and result-oriented fitness practitioners should know that the pH level in the body may have an impact on their performance. Even minor variations in acid-alkaline balance can make a difference, as our muscles work best within a narrow pH range. This is why it is advisable to drink a lot of ionised water before, during and after exercise.
Physical overload, overwork and physical as well as emotional exhaustion bring about oxidative stress and accelerate the emaciation of the body’s systems. Studies have shown that antioxidants, vitamin C, E and selenium in particular, help deal with these problems naturally. Antioxidants also promote the production of enzymes, which are important for weight regulation, nutrient assimilation, hormonal balance, etc.
Ionised alkaline water is a natural antioxidant. Antioxidants are as important in sports as in any other field of activity because they activate vital processes in the body, strengthen the immune system and protect the cells against DNA damage. This allows athletes to endure a greater workload and achieve better results.
The molecular structure of ionised water is very important. Smaller molecular formations thin the blood. Thinner blood transfers oxygen easier. The more oxygen cells receive, the less likely they are to produce lactic acid. In the absence of oxygen, anaerobic processes take place in the body, which make it harder to work out, tire you out faster and lead to muscle ache.
Besides, thanks to its smaller molecular formations ionised alkaline water is more fluid than regular water, which makes it easier and quicker for cells to absorb. Such water dissolves toxins and fat at a higher rate and thus helps regulate weight.
Ionised alkaline water contains a greater quantity of alkaline minerals. Research has shown that the amount of sodium responsible for the regulatory processes of the alkaline buffer markedly decreases during an intense workout. This leads to the acidification of the body. Alkaline water contains a greater concentration of sodium ions than regular water, which enables the more efficient restoration of lost reserves.
Weight regulation
Many athletes train hard trying to reduce their body weight in order to fit into specific weight classes. The same applies to recreational athletes who are eager to shed extra pounds. For this purpose, both choose foods high in protein and fatty acids, which acidify the body. Ionised alkaline water helps restore acid-alkaline balance because of its superior absorption, fluidity and detoxifying effect.
Some people prefer sports drinks as a source of hydration during their workouts. But they don’t know that sports drinks have high levels of acidity. When you consume acidic beverages, your body leeches alkalising minerals, especially magnesium from the muscles and calcium from the bones, cartilage and tissues – these are the most vulnerable areas of the athlete’s body. In addition to this, sports drinks usually contain sugars, carbs, flavouring, colouring and sweeteners.
Ionised water, in contrast, replenishes the body’s supply of alkaline minerals. Besides, it is free of sugars and artificial additives. It provides superior hydration and quenches thirst naturally and more efficiently.
